In the 19th Century, people would still care about your family name. It even applies in the 20th and 21st Century as evidenced by people named Bush and Clinton running for office.

One might imagine, given the intervening Civil War, which would have dimmed his military exploits, and, as we know he wasn’t in office long. Still it is within at least a person’s lifetime at 47 years. Looking back from now, that would be 1963, when Kennedy was president.
