The appointment of Vice Presidents when there was a vacancy was provided for in the 25th Amendment. And there's a whole website devoted to the 25th Amendment by someone who is really keen on it.

The first VP to be appointed was Gerald Ford, who replaced Spiro Agnew, who had resigned in 1973. Agnew was the second VP to resign. John Calhoun resigned in 1832.

Ford appointed Nelson Rockefeller to replace him in 1974.

Prior to the direct election of senators, if you wanted to run for a Senate seat, you let the proper people know and you would go around the state lining up state legislators whom you thought would vote for you. Then you would have to do some more politicking once the legislature met to make sure you got elected as there weren't any binding pledges or formal nominations.

So, if Lincoln hadn't changed running mates, we would have had a President named Hannibal? And if Johnson's impeachment came through, we would have President Ben Wade?

To that point, when did they start allowing the President to appoint a VP when there was a vacancy? Was Nelson Rockefeller the first?

Lastly, how did Johnson run for the Senate in the days before direct elections? Did candidates work the state legislatures?

I followed a link here from Dodger Thoughts that implied you had some information about Matt Kemp. I don't see anything about Matt Kemp. But now that I'm here I'm going to look around a bit.
