Hamilton had an affair with a married woman. That woman’s husband blackmailed Hamilton to keep it quiet, but somehow he implicated Hamilton in another scandal, Monroe and some other Jefferson allies confronted Hamilton about it, who admitted to the affair but nothing else. Monroe let it get out into the open and destroyed Hamilton’s political prospects. I believe that the woman’s last name was Reynolds.

I would suspect that a Venn diagram of “Guys whom Henry Clay didn’t like” and “Guys whom Henry Clay thought weren’t very bright” would have a significant overlap.

Did not care for this biography at all. I would have liked to have heard more about his role in destroying the political career of Alexander Hamilton.
