The author checked with the Library of Congress and found out that Garfield checked out more books from LC than any other member of Congress during Garfield’s service in DC.

I’ve always been fond of Sarah Vowell’s account of the Garfield presidency in Assassination Vacation. An avid reader, Garfield was constantly lamenting in his journals that he just wanted some time alone with his books. Poor guy.

Fascinating. I knew nothing about this one except, well, you know.

But you might want to tweak this sentence:

“Rutkow compares the treatment that Ronald Reagan received in 1981 to the treatment that Garfield received 100 years later.”
